If you are an artist, you are probably wondering where to find real, high quality art supplies in Jochiwon/Sejong. While stationery stores have a variety of simple art supplies such as watercolor paints, sketchbooks, pencils, etc., their selection is limited and you may walk away feeling dissatisfied that you couldn’t find what you were looking for. Luckily, we have an art store right here in Jochiwon. Although things are haphazardly strewn about the small basement-like space, it has just about all the art supplies you might need.

About the Art Store:

Located near Hongik University (an art school), the art store (송원화방) is stocked full of office, painting, and sketching supplies (including every kind of sketchbook you could ever want or need), electronics, paper, and supplies for nearly all other mediums of art. The office supplies section (term used loosely here because each part of the store is crowded into the next) of the store looks like a mini Office Depot or OfficeMax crammed into about 1/10 the size of one of those stores you might be used to. They have everything from binders to rulers to staplers to hole-punches to every kind of notebook you could imagine.

The sketchbook selection is also extremely extensive and you can find all types of drawing pencils, markers, pens, and pastels. This isn’t the cheap, cute, and pink kind you would find at a typical stationery store, but the authentic well-made kind you would look for as an artist or university art major.

The painting supplies section was where I got really giddy. They stock acrylics, tempera (poster paint), oils, watercolor, fabric paint, dyes, and even spray paint in more colors than a standard box of 24 crayons. They also have a varied selection of paintbrushes and all the essentials you need for oil and acrylic painting, such as linseed oil, turpentine, and acrylic paint varnish. They stock canvases in many sizes and shapes, but you will need to ask for them because they keep them in a shed-like extension outside the building. You can simply ask for canvas in English.

You can find supplies for other art mediums such as whittling, fabric dying, building models, sculpting, and many more! They offer a huge selection of different colors, sizes and textures of paper; some are on rolls, some in sheets. They also have other rare items like wooden and glass rods (we assume for architectural model building) and a variety of different types of string.

It is exciting to go through the store and see all the different kinds of supplies. The downside, however, is that they have fit nearly an entire art store into a shop the size of a cafe; you may have to dig through baskets, look under shelves, or reach to the very top of a shelf to obtain the items you are looking for. This place is a treasure trove, though, so we suggest you keep looking or ask someone who works there for help before you walk out thinking they don’t have what you are looking for.

 Other Perks:

Another exciting perk of this store is they have the capability to print nearly anything in nearly any size. Just bring your USB and the kind people at the store will be able to help you out. In addition to printing, they have a laminating machine (NOTE: AKA coating machine in Konglish), so if you need something printed and pressed with a glossy finish, this is a good place to go.

We hope this article was helpful in helping you locate any art supplies you need, but if you are still looking for something, or perhaps need a more craft-like item we suggest you try S. in Daejeon, Junganro area. This is a 5-floor mega stationery store laid out in a pristinely organized and well-stocked fashion. For a map and directions, click the link below.
